The Field Hockey team needs some volunteers!

Posted Thursday, March 05, 2009 by Amy Wood
Along with all the other teams, we have been asked to help with the mulch sale which will benefit out stadium field.  Most of the  work (distributing flyers, and distributing mulch) will be done by the team - but we really need a parent (or two) to help organize this effort. Dads, Moms, help!

For the last two years this has been run by and to benefit the football team, and they made over $10,000 last year.  With the involvement of all the field teams, we expect this mulch sale to be the biggest ever.

The funds will help to maintain our Bermuda grass field. "Bermuda grass is the pickup truck of the grass species," said Cale Bigelow, a Purdue agronomist and turf expert. "If you buy a pickup truck, it wants to be driven and it wants to be used. Bermuda grass is the same way: It wants to be beat up, and it wants to take the load. It's not the prettiest grass in the world, but it's extremely durable when it's actively growing.

Maintaining this tough turf costs our Athletic department over $30,000 per year and guess what, we do not receive any money  from Montgomery County to help with this upkeep. It comes directly out of the Athletic Department budget. Other schools that have the same type of field receive large donations from their booster organizations to pay for this.  So by raising the money through independent an fundraiser, like the mulch sale, we can free up our school's budget money for other things like better safety equipment, uniform needs, and many other team needs thus benefiting all our athletes.

Also, no other team benefits more from a Bermuda grass field than the field hockey team. The nicer our field, the more we benefit. I have committed field hockey to this fundraiser, so please we need each and every player involved in the sale. As parents are already aware, that includes you as well!
